What Is Your Life Verse?

I became a Christian at age 33. Before that, I had read scripture passages but never read the Bible or studied it. When I came to know the Lord, I could not get enough of God’s word. The Bible and its words and meanings opened up to me! I was so thirsty! 33 years is a long time to go without Living Water!
As I was reading through the Bible I read a verse from Psalms…
AS A DEER PANTS AFTER WATER BROOKS, SO MY SOUL PANTS AFTER YOU, O LORD Ps 42:1
This verse so described how I longed for the Lord and His Word. My soul was just so thirsty for both!
During those first years of learning about God, my thirst seemed unquenchable! And Psalm 42:1 became my first life verse.
What Is A Life Verse
Have you heard of a life verse?
A life verse is a scripture verse from the Bible that speaks to you in a very special way. It seems as if it was put in God’s Word just for you! There is usually a reason why it so resonates with your soul and spirit, and you probably have a story connected to it.
Even though you may know hundreds of bible verses, this is the one verse that sums up something about God and you. How extraordinary!
A Mother Son Example
When my son was a little boy, I would try to describe to him just how much I loved him every night as I was tucking him into bed. I would tell him I loved him more than “this” as I stretched out my arms wide. Or I would tell him I loved him more than all the stars in the sky or all the trucks in the world. Every night, I compared my love for him to something new.
One night, as I was tucking him into bed, I told him I loved him more than all the “dirt” in the world. He loved that! As a little boy who could find a whole lot of dirt, this resonated with him!
Another time, I told him I loved him more than all the “electrons” in the world! And this description became another favorite!
So, I would say, “I love you more than all the dirt and all the electrons and stars in the whole world,” and Christopher would have a glimpse of just how much I loved him!
When I wrote him little notes, I would sign them “Love dirt, electrons and stars, Mom”.
It became so understood between us that all I would have to say or write was “DIRT” and he would know just what this word meant. It created a bond between us. Funny that such an odd word was so special!
A life verse is like that. It hits you right in your heart. Others don’t understand it the way you do! A life verse is between you and God.
My Life Verse Now
I think having a life verse is such a wonderful idea. It gives us an intimate closeness to our great Father! We can hold this verse close and feel God near.
My life verse has changed from the one I clung to decades ago.
Oh, I still love Psalm 42:1 just as much as I did when I first read that passage. And I still feel so thirsty for God’s Word in my life.
But as I matured as a Christian, I found a verse that is truly the cry of my heart.
MAY YOU BE FILLED WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF HIS WILL IN ALL SPIRITUAL WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING, SO THAT YOU MAY WALK IN A MANNER WORTHY OF THE LORD TO PLEASE HIM IN ALL RESPECTS, BEARING FRUIT IN EVERY GOOD WORK AND INCREASING IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD.
Colossians 1:9-10
Do you have a life verse? I’d love you to share it here!
And if you don’t, why don’t you pray for one? You will know when you find it. It’s like God whispering in your ear and you hearing it in the center of your heart!
Happy Sunday, friends!
I look forward to your Sunday messages and thank you for this ministry. I was brought up by the “Golden Rule” in Ephesians 4:32 ” And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God, for Christ’s sake, hath forgiven you. ” To me, it demonstrates how actions speak louder than words. Something I strive to live by every day and thank My Heavenly Father for forgiving me.
Yes! Beautiful
Though my circumstances have improved greatly, these verses came to me during a most difficult and barren time in my life. Habakkuk 3:17-19. Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food ,the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation . God, the Lord , is my strength; He makes my feet like the deer’s ; He makes me tread on my high places. This passage continually reminds me that He is all I need
Beautiful, Lorraine.
My life verse is 1 Thess 5:16-18 “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus in you.” Great post today…I look forward to reading yours when they come!
The verse is so true and Amen!!!!
Love your site…
My favorite verse is Job 19:25-27 “FOR I KNOW THAT MY REDEEMER LIVETH, AND THAT HE SHALL STAND AT THE LATTER DAY UPON THE EARTH; AND THOUGH AFTER MY SKIN WORMS DESTROY THIS BODY, YET IN MY FLESH SHALL I SEE GOD; WHOM I SHALL SEE FOR MYSELF, AND MINE EYES SHALL BEHOLD, AND NOT ANOTHER, THOUGH MY REINS BE CONSUMED WITHIN ME.”
With this crazy, fear filled world we live in today…isn’t it such a great blessing to KNOW that our God is alive and still sovereign, and we as believers will indeed SEE him one day. WE WIN whether here on this side of heaven, or “over there.”
Oh such glorious, beautiful truth! Thank you for sharing!
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Phil 4:13
New to your blog. Love your style and I’m your neighbor in Drumore! Blessings!
Oh, I don’t know many people down here. How nice to hear from you!
Having been recently (and unexpectedly) widowed I am leaning heavily on Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And HE shall direct your paths.
I am so sorry Susan! God bless you!
I’m seeing this a year later and hoping you have found peace and answers to your prayers. ? For me this scripture was the first instant answer to an emotional plea letting me know Heavenly Father knew me and the thoughts and intents of my heart.
So wonderful Kim! God knows us intimately!
You have a special place in my heart. <3 Philippians 1:7
So sweet, Sharon! God bless you!
Mine is Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born I set you apart. I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
I have Autism and Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum (meaning I was born without the Corpus Callosum which is the wide band of fibres that connects the two hemispheres of the brain and transmits motor, sensory and cognitive information.) I struggled to fit in with my neurotypical (“normal”) peers and was bullied all through life and felt like an outcast.
In 2014, I attended Y.C, a conference for Christian youth in my home province of Newfoundland. One of the speakers did a sermon titled “Misfits Welcome”. He read Jeremiah 1:5 and then he said that all those who are different and feel like they don’t belong are welcome in the house of God and we were made our unique way for a reason. God knew what he was doing and he has a plan for us. Hearing those words filled me with so much emotion that it flowed out through my eyes. That verse and that sermon have stuck with me ever since.
“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
— Psalm 118:24
This reminds me to be thankful for each day and that God is already in it. Nothing is a surprise to Him and he can make good out of every hard thing.
I say that first thing each morning too! It is a beautiful and true reminder. Thanks for sharing.
I look forward to your Sunday messages every week. My life verse is John 16:33 – I have told you these things, so that in me you will have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
That verse speaks to me as well! Very well chosen.
I was born again at the age of 18. At 19, I married the man who introduced Jesus to me. At 20, we gave birth to Christina Lavette. At 21, I separated from that man due to his physical abuse. My life verses during those challenging times as a single parent is: “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. 5If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 8A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” These verses gave me the permission to have joy in the midst of troubles and let me know that my estranged husband would have to answer to God because of his double-mindedness.
My life verse now is: “Search me, O God, and know my heart: Try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24 The reason why is because when you’re consistently told what a good person you are, it could have one believing they can do no wrong. I know I can. So, this verse keeps me aware that I need God’s direction in my life in order to please Him and not man.
So wise! God bless you,Lavette
I was teaching a 2nd grade SS class, and our director told a story of a little girl and her friend running through a cemetery as a shortcut from school to home. On a tombstone she read “fullness of joy,” which meant nothing to her. One day her friend invited her to go to SS. The verse they were learning was Psalm 16:11. You have shown me the path of life. In Your presence is fullness of joy. At your right hand are pleasures forevermore. I was 27 when I chose that for my life verse, and I will soon be 80.
How beautiful!
I LOVE your verse! There are so many, but my life verse at this stage of my life is Micah 6:8…..And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. I am deeply involved in the prolife movement. Passing laws to protect the innocent, and helping moms who choose life. So this verse speaks to me.
Your are doing God’s work, Shelley!
I love having a life verse to fill my heart with joy and hope whenever I think of it. My life verse is Psalm 91:4
“He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler”. And He has covered me with his feathers many, many times. This month marks 12 years that I have been cancer free from ovarian cancer and that verse sums it all up. I turned it all over to Him and I was given so many blessings during that time. He has always been my strength.
How blessed your are Karon! Our dear Lord offers that grace, safety, and trust for everyone. What a marvelous life verse.
Psalms 51:10. Create in me a new heart O GOD, & renew a steadfast within me..
I have thought many times about changing this life verse that I have had over 30 years, but every time I do, the Lord directs me back to this one.
I think HE is trying to tell me “something “. Heehee
I Praise HIM because HE is such a good, good GOD..
I LOVE that Psalm.
