CHRISTMAS TREE IN THE LIVING ROOM

Stocking on the mantel

This Christmas, I found myself drawn to simplicity—to a quiet, natural feel that reflects the serenity of a walk in the woods. Last year, I used plenty of natural elements, along with my Christmas tree collection, and experimented with a non-traditional color palette.

This year, I’m taking that organic look and interesting Christmas color palette even further. Rather than buying new decorations, I explored my Christmas stash, gathering green, copper, and brown pieces that exude a natural feel. I even borrowed from my fall decor, blending elements from both seasons to create this year’s festive look. Although I did not buy new Christmas decorations, I found some festive plants and pinecones!

Because I crave a bit of simplicity in my life, I do not get hung up if things are not perfect. I made a conscious decision to enjoy the process and be laid back.

This year is all about using organic and not overthinking my decor. Here are some ideas I used to infuse our home with the beauty of nature and a festive feel!

Color Palette And Mood

I always start any decorating project by choosing a color palette and a mood or theme. This year’s color story was easy to pick—it is very similar to last year’s. I just was not finished exploring the beauty of green, copper, and brown for Christmas.

Choosing a color story and how you want a room to feel (mood or theme) is the most important way to be a successful home decorator. You might like to read…

These posts have tons of Interior Design tidbits that will make you a better and more confident decorator.

In The Living Room

Here’s a look at all the organics that are the foundation of our Christmas decor. I hope you use some of these easy ideas in your home this year…

Adding A Nativity

nativity 2

Jesus is the center of Christmas in our home, and our nativity takes a special spot on the Curlacue chest. Although it is not a handcarved nativity, it has a soft, organic look. The nativity is the first item I add to our living room each year.

Adding a natively to your home is a beautiful and constant reminder of why we celebrate Christmas.

Dressed Up Greens On The Mantel

Like almost every other year, I used faux greens on our mantel. Greens on a mantel have a traditional look and luxurious feel. I would love to use real garlands, but they would dry out quickly as we use our fireplace every day this time of year.

Let’s Make A Christmas Garland

2-Christmas mantel- greens and leaves-1
  • Make The Foundation: Twist together Norfolk Pine and Cedar garland.
  • Place The Garland: Lay the combined garland across the mantel.
  • Secure The Garland: Fasten the garland securely to the mantel using THESE.
  • Add Texture: Weave a little grapevine into the garland.
  • Add Fullness: Add additional evergreen sprigs throughout the garland.
  • Finish With Accents: Add copper leaf stems and pods for a beautiful accent.

To call attention to the top of the mantel, I added a trio of tall candlesticks with burnt orange candlesticks. I use the same ones for fall. And the final touch was adding the stockings to the mantel. I hung them to the underside of the mantel with THESE.

Make One Beautiful Arrangement

If you add one Christmas arrangement, centerpiece, or vignette to every room in your home, you will have the foundation of your holiday decor!

Arrangements are so easy to make, and they make a big statement! They are attention-grabbers, show-stoppers, and give a room that WOW factor. Even if they are small and simple, they add life and depth to a space.

Use Christmas greens and other organics that add beauty and interest to an arrangement.

Let’s Make A Statement Arrangement

  • Choose A Large Urn: Select your largest urn to create a substantial arrangement.
  • Use Dry Floral Foam for Stability: Dry floral foam works best for larger arrangements—see it HERE.
  • Layer Greens: Arrange different types of greens in the urn, layering them until you’re satisfied with the shape and fullness.
  • Finish With Seed Pods: Add brown seed pods for a natural, textured accent.

I used my stash of greens I’ve collected over the years and did not pay attention to the color or type of evergreen I used in this arrangement. It was more about creating a pretty shape and having a laid-back attitude!

I finished decorating the white buffet with burnt orange spiral candles and green bay leaf candles in various candlesticks. Even after blowing out the flame, I could smell their beautiful aroma all day! On the other side of the arrangement, I added a candle in a tan and white checked glass-lidded container and a reindeer on the other. The reindeer, although pretty, was a bit small, so I exchanged it for a larger, more stately one!

Grapevine Adds Texture And Depth

I love what I call a brambly look, and grapevines are perfect for creating it in our home. I used them in the tree, on the mantel, and in the dining room.

Let’s Make Grapevine From A Wreath

I bought inexpensive grapevine wreaths at Hobby Lobby. I looked for wreaths with thin vines.

  1. Unwrap The Vine: Carefully unwrap the vine that holds the wreath together.
  2. Gently Unravel The Wreath: Slowly unravel the wreath, keeping the wrapped vines intact.
  3. Cut The Grapevine: Cut the grapevine into manageable lengths for easy use.

The Christmas Tree

Christmas tree

It would have been nice to decorate a real Christmas tree for our organic Christmas this year, but it would have dried out before Christmas Eve. Instead, we used our trusty 13-year-old Balsam Hill tree, which has held up beautifully over the years! This season, I adorned it with layers of grapevines, pinecones, leaves, hydrangeas, pods, and a single nest. All of the tree’s ornaments are either pinecones or acorns, keeping the look natural and earthy.

Because the tree was supposed to look brambly, I really did not worry that every branch was perfectly decorated. I had so much fun!!!

Originally, I planned to fill it with bird ornaments. We’ve been collecting ornaments representing the 23 bird species (and one squirrel!) that have visited our feeders. However, the bird ornaments felt too bright for the calm, organic look I wanted, so they’ll perch on the tabletop tree in our sunroom instead.

I chose not to add a tree topper as the tree looks more natural without one. Again, for a natural look, I used a faux fur blanket as a tree skirt.

Decorating Under The Tree When You Have Not Wrapped Gifts

2-under the tree decor

I still have quite a few Christmas gifts left to buy, which means I haven’t wrapped a gift yet! But a tree without anything underneath can look a bit bare. The solution? Add other decor for a festive touch!

Ideas For What To Add Under A Tree

2-under the tree decor 2

On the left side of the tree, I stacked two white boxes dressed up with ribbon, a small wreath, and other seasonal accents. I also placed a low-sided basket filled with gift-wrapping supplies—perfect for grabbing whenever I’m ready to wrap a Christmas present.

PRESENT UNDER THE TREE

On the right side, I set out a taller basket holding a couple of scarves, a faux-wrapped gift, and a large sugar pinecone. I nestled it alongside another pinecone, a faux gift, and a trio of bells for a charming look.

As I place real gifts under the tree, I can rearrange or remove this decor. It’s a simple yet impactful way to make sure the area under the tree looks styled and complete.

Here are other attractive things to put under a Christmas tree…

  • Ginger jars
  • Lanterns
  • Santas
  • Basket of flowers
  • Child’s chair
  • Train set
  • Nutcracker
  • Bowls of Greens
  • Sled
  • Folded quilts in a basket
  • Teddy bears

Decorating With Wreaths

Wreaths are quintessential Christmas decor! I like hanging them on my front door and the glass front of our bookcase.

I also use them as a candle ring! Just add a candle, and it becomes a showy centerpiece or arrangement!

I transformed a fall wreath by hot-gluing small snippets of faux evergreen and trimming just the right amount of fall leaves to achieve a balanced look. The result is a full, designer-inspired Christmas wreath that was both inexpensive and easy to create. Keep an eye out for a DIY post about it coming next week!

One of my favorite wreaths, which I often use as a candle ring is my sweet gum ball wreath. Originally crafted for fall, it fits beautifully into this year’s Christmas decor, adding a handsome, textured touch!

Plants And Flowers

A Christmas home is not complete without Christmas-inspired plants and flowers. This year, I’ve fallen in love with indoor plants! I found this little table and knew it would be perfect for a couple of plants in front of the window in our living room.

The bottom shelf has a basket of sugar pinecones and a few smaller conifer varieties.

This festive wreath-shaped plant came from a local Amish greenhouse, and I knew it would add a fun, organic look to our home. I added one of my favorite Christmas flowers, paperwhites, beside the wreath-shaped plant. These paperwhites are not real. However, bulbs are growing in the dining room, which I’ll show you on Thursday.

Other Organics To Use In Your Christmas Home

Christmas and organics go hand in hand. They bring life, depth, and a charming beauty to holiday decor! Here are other organics I’ve used to decorate our Christmas home and more options for decorating yours.

  • Pinecones
  • Dried Oranges and other fruits
  • Berries
  • Magnolia leaves
  • Nuts
  • Moss
  • Cinnamon Sticks
  • Cranberries
  • Birch logs
  • Dried hydrangeas
  • Mistletoe

One of my favorite touches for holiday decor is a dried orange. Whether tucked into a wreath, adorning a Christmas gift, or garnishing the side of a festive drink, dried oranges are easy to make and add a lovely, organic surprise. You might like to learn How To Dry Oranges HERE.

Well, friends, one room down and three more to go! Come back on Thursday to see our dining room and the ideas for using more organics. Here’s a little peek…

    1. Hi Shelly, I’m so glad you like the tree. I wasn’t sure how my readers would like it. I love using organics like most of us do. Happy Thanksgiving.

    Yvonne,
I LOVE your organic decor! So beautiful and peaceful. I planned to use cranberry and rose with lots of greens this year and will be following your lead on organics. Greenery is my favorite holiday decor. I also have a beautiful porcelain nativity that I bought circa 1987. I always feared it would get broken when my children were young, or during one of our moves, but I’ve been very careful to pack it in the original styrofoam and place up high. It’s still intact and now I have grandchildren!
So great to catch up with you. We met at Haven in Charleston and you were so gracious to buy us all lunch. I’ll never forget that.
    With love, Dianne Miley

    1. Hi Rachel, Happy Thanksgiving. I have a bin of stockings and can’t help adding to them almost every year. I found the top stocking at a local shop and it somehow jumped into my cart!

  4. Your home is so beautifully decorated for Christmas! I love how you use texture to create amazing depth in your decor. I’m wild about your Christmas tree and how you styled your fireplace mantel. So many great ideas! Pinned!

    1. Thanks, Michelle! It was really fun to decorate this year. Happy Thanksgiving.

  6. I love your nature inspired decorating this year. It’s a refreshing change from all the influencers draping their trees in tons of tinsel or little bows everywhere. It reminded me of a tree I decorated in the late nineties. I wired pine cones and bought baby breathe to tuck in the branches. I loved it! But when my kids came home they were disappointed that their fave decorations were not on the tree. Down to the basement they went and came up with tors to add their touch. I didn’t care as long as everyone was happy. A sweet memory.

    1. Joanna, I LOVE your attitude. Christmas is all about memories and it adding to the tree made your children happy that’s okay! When each of our kids got married we have them their childhood ornaments as a shower gift so they had something to put on their tree.

  9. The link for the reindeer planter does not work and I was going to ask you where you got it. I LOVE it!!!!

    1. I found the planter but it is just selling the candle ring that is in the planter. How did you get the deer planter?

    2. Pinky, it must be out of stock. Sorry! I found it last year at Cocalico Home.
